Feature Requests

Filter cards that have the user’s annotations added
Consider implementing a feature in Recall macOS app (knowledge management) where user can search/filter cards that have the user’s annotations added (apart from YouTube transcript) to differentiate from cards with no user’s personal edits/comments. Perplexity AI: This is a strategically sound feature request: add a “has user annotations” flag so Recall can filter/search only cards where you have added your own notes, edits, or comments beyond the original transcript/AI summary. [1][2] Conceptually, Recall already distinguishes between source content (YouTube transcripts, articles, PDFs) and your own notes, but the UI and search layer do not yet expose a simple, first‑class filter for “personally edited” vs “pure import/auto-summary” cards. [1][3][4] A robust implementation on macOS could include: - A metadata field (e.g. hasUserEdits: true/false ) that flips to true the first time you type, highlight, or modify content in a card, and is queryable in search. [5][6] - A visible filter chip or smart view (“Annotated only”) in the sidebar or search bar, plus an optional visual indicator (icon/badge) on cards that contain personal annotations. [5][6] - Advanced search syntax such as is:annotated or “Cards with my notes only” that can be combined with existing filters like source (YouTube, PDF), tag, or date. [2][5] From a knowledge‑management and learning‑science perspective, separating annotated cards aligns with evidence that active note‑taking and self‑explanation significantly improve retention and transfer, allowing you to prioritise review of content where you have already invested cognitive effort. Peer‑reviewed work on active recall, elaborative interrogation, and spaced practice consistently shows higher learning gains when learners generate their own annotations and questions rather than passively re‑reading. [1][3][7] As a seasoned policy and product position, the case for this feature is strong: - Pros: better focus on high‑value cards, clearer signal of where your own thinking lives, and richer future features (e.g. “summarise only my annotations this quarter”). [2][5] - Cons/counter‑arguments: added complexity to the UI and the need to handle edge cases (e.g. AI‑generated edits vs human edits, bulk imports) can be mitigated by keeping the feature optional and default‑off in the main interface, exposing it first as an advanced search flag. [5][6] Thought‑provoking question: If Recall could rank or surface content primarily by the density and recency of your annotations, rather than by source or recency alone, how would that change the way you study, review, and decide what truly matters in your personal knowledge base?
